31 Jul London: Guards

20140619 - Palace 2

We started the day by sightseeing Westminster Abbey then walking to Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace. I would like to get a taste of watching the Guard Change Ceremony without having to wait in long lineups in front of the Palace. We arrived at Wellington Barracks by 11ish in the morning and got an unobstructed spot to watch the Queen’s Guards being inspected. They played tunes and marched just like the main event of Changing the Guard. By 11:30am, they started leaving Wellington Barracks and marched towards Buckingham Palace. Quite interesting to watch and it’s a time effective way to enjoy the ceremony with no crowds.

We didn’t spend too much time around the Palace as there were just too many tourists standing around which you can tell by the picture below. We managed to see the Horse Guards marching to the gates before we left. I know it sounds cliche, but I believe it’s worthwhile experiencing Guard Mounting in person.

The most interesting part for us is seeing the guards to play Michael Jackson’s music in front of the Palace at the Ceremony:)
