05 Apr Staycation @The DOUGLAS
Staycation is my kind of spring break activity, all about pampering with comfortable stay, great food and luxurious spa. We had a chance to visit the DOUGLAS, an Autograph Collection Hotel for a weekend getaway. The lobby is beautiful and even though we had to wait in line to check in but process was very smooth. The staff there also were so kind to offer us bottles of water while we were waiting.
Their check in time is around 4pm, it’s rather late in my opinion but if your room is not ready, their D/6 lounge is definitely worth checking out. It’s spacious and interiors are done so tastefully with great large windows and seatings. It’s such a nice way to hang out and enjoy the happy hour.
We were lucky to get the room with a view overlooking the B.C Place. The day view doesn’t seem that spectacular but wait until the sky gets dark and lights are up, the view is amazing and one of a kind that you don’t get to enjoy from other hotels in the downtown area. To me this view is one of primary reasons to stay in this property. The room is well decorated with edgy touches like the exposed concrete finish, dark wood finish and brass accents. And of course the choice of toiletries are the key to tell whether it’ a high end boutique hotel, AESOP simply won’t disappoint.
As much I appreciate the chic details this hotel to offer, small improvements may give guests a even more memorable stay. There is no coffee, tea making facility and mini fridge, which I find inconvenient and if you are the one do care a lot to have Nespresso machine in a room, you don’t have any other choice but to order room service. I hope they may consider adding a water kettle or coffee machine in the future. Having said that their room service is 24H and their breakfasts are very good and not notoriously overpriced, so breakfast in bed is highly recommended and try the Dungeness crab egg benedict, so good!
The bathroom is bright and spacious, with good rain shower, but why there is no soaking tub? It doesn’t bother me too much but I wish there would be one, bathing is such a relaxing thing to do in a staycation right?
The DOUGLAS is located in Parq Vancouver which is like an ultimate entertainment destination – imagine like Las Vegas with casinos, restaurants and bar, so no surprise the popular restaurant Honey Salt from Vegas opens a satellite location in Vancouver. The restaurant is beautiful and divided into different sections, we were seating in the main dining area with nice looking banquettes. The menu is simple, with a farm to table theme, our favourite dish from the menu is the Iberico Pork Secreto. We literally had to fight for that last piece, it’s tender, slightly charbroiled with full of flavours, not overdone with spices nor seasonings. I also quite enjoyed my black cod dish, like how the chef not doing the baked miso style, more like a bouillabaisse served in a bowl of a warm creamy broth. For dessert, no brainer we were having the famous Society Chocolate & Banana Cake. I really like the layers of banana bread, cream and chocolate cake, surprisingly it sounds like a dense and heavy combination, but it’s overly sweet or dense. The portion is also so huge that I find it’s really good deal because you can easily share one piece of cake with a party of 4.
And the best thing to unwind and relax in staycation is to indulge in spa experience. I highly recommend you to visit the newly open Spa by JW Vancouver. The couple suite is some of the nicest spa rooms I have been to, book the evening appointment with a city’s night view that’s even better. I chose the customized massage that the therapist can tailor to my needs and sore muscles, and also let me pick my favourite essential oil blends from Aromatherapy Associates. I also spent almost 2 hours chilling in the spa lounge, reading magazines, sipping a cup of TWG tea and enjoying the city view of Vancouver after the treatment.
Overall I very much enjoy the staycation at the DOUGLAS, I love that everything there is brand new, spotless and decorated tastefully. If you have a long weekend or some special occasion to celebrate, would you consider to do a staycation? Let me know where you have the best staycation or have the most fun activity to unwind?
