21 Jun Oahu: Street Food
I believe almost nobody left Oahu without at least trying out once from shrimp truck or precisely the Giovanni’s shrimp truck in North Shore. Driving into the Haleiwa town, you’ll get to see a few food trucks around and it’s no surprise you’ll see a long line in front of Giovanni’s. The menu was very simple, you only get to choose 3 different flavoured shrimp: garlic scampi, lemon butter or hot spicy. We have ordered the popular shrimp scampi with loads of garlic on top and lemon butter shrimp, both served with white rice.
I like the scampi plate a little better but both were fresh, succulent and delicious! Was it a tourist trap overall? I found the food was delicious and full of flavours, that’s all I care when I travel for food.
Another local food scene you may not want to miss is the KCC farmer’s market on every Saturday. It was vibrant with many local food stalls – from fresh fruits, Acai bowls, macadamia nuts cookies to fresh grilled seafood and musubi. I highly recommend my top street food favourite in the market (probably in Oahu)- Kona BBQ Abalone!!!! Hands down the most memorable food I had in Hawaii – so soft, juicy and fresh that you only need a little lemon juice to enhance the flavour.
Got sweet tooth? No problem. I have heard so much good things about fresh mochi in Hawaii and indeed the fresh strawberry mochi I tried was heaven!!! The chewy soft mochi shell filled with big sweet strawberry with red bean paste, the sweetness and texture were just perfect.
I’m sure I have covered a small portion of local street food only….let me know what’s your favourite local food in Hawaii and glad to hear about more from you.
